Oval engagement rings have become one of the most requested styles in the UK, and it is easy to see why. An oval diamond sparkles like a round brilliant, looks larger for its weight and sits beautifully on the finger. This guide covers everything you need to know before buying an oval engagement ring online in the UK, from proportions and settings to gold carats, ring sizes, delivery and import charges.
What Makes the Oval Shape So Popular?
An oval is a brilliant-cut diamond stretched into a soft, elongated outline. That simple change brings three practical advantages:
- It shows more surface area than a round stone of the same carat weight, so you see more diamond for your money.
- Worn lengthways, it lengthens the look of the finger.
- It has no sharp corners or points, so it is less likely to chip than a pear, marquise or princess cut.
Ovals also suit both classic and modern tastes, which is why you will find them in everything from a slim solitaire to a bold toi et moi.
Proportions: Getting the Oval Shape Right
Length-to-Width Ratio
Divide the length of the diamond by its width and you have its ratio. This number decides the character of the stone.
| Ratio | Appearance |
|---|---|
| Under 1.35 | Soft and rounded, almost cushion-like |
| 1.35 – 1.50 | The traditional oval most people picture |
| Over 1.50 | Slender and elegant, great for east-west settings |
Try to see the stone on a hand, even in a photo, because a ratio that looks right on paper can feel different on the finger.
Checking for a Bow-Tie
Many ovals show a darker, bow-shaped shadow across the middle. A light bow-tie gives the stone contrast and is perfectly normal. A heavy, dark one that does not change as the ring moves makes the diamond look lifeless. Always ask for video, and read GIA's advice on oval cut diamonds if you would like to learn more.
Colour, Clarity and Size
Colour tends to show at the ends of an oval, so a colourless stone looks brightest, particularly in white gold. For clarity, eye-clean is the goal. Our lab grown oval diamonds come in D to F colour with VVS to VS clarity. When comparing sizes, look at the measurements in millimetres: a 1 carat oval is roughly 8 × 6 mm, a 2 carat roughly 10 × 7 mm and a 3 carat roughly 11.5 × 8 mm.
Oval Engagement Ring Settings Compared
| Setting | Why choose it | Shop |
|---|---|---|
| Solitaire | Timeless and lets the diamond speak for itself | Solitaire rings |
| Hidden halo | Extra sparkle from the side, clean outline from above | Hidden halo rings |
| Halo | Maximum size and sparkle | Halo rings |
| East-west | Modern and low-profile | East-west rings |
| Bezel | Most protective for busy hands | Bezel rings |
| Trilogy | Three stones for past, present and future | Trilogy rings |
| Toi et moi | Two stones side by side, a very current look | Toi et moi rings |
Gold Carat Explained for UK Buyers
In the UK, gold purity is often described as 9ct or 18ct. Our rings are made in 10ct (10K), 14ct (14K) and 18ct (18K) gold, in white, yellow or rose. Platinum is available for custom designs.
- 18ct gold is 75% pure gold, with the richest colour.
- 14ct gold is 58.5% pure gold, a strong everyday choice.
- 10ct gold is 41.7% pure gold, the hardest-wearing and most affordable.
Yellow gold ovals are especially popular at the moment, giving a warm, heirloom feel.
Lab Grown Diamond or Moissanite?
A lab grown oval diamond is a real diamond, grown in a lab and graded by IGI. Moissanite is a separate gemstone that is slightly less hard (9.25 on the Mohs scale against 10 for diamond) and shows more colourful fire. Both look stunning in an oval, and moissanite lets you go bigger on a smaller budget. See our oval lab grown diamond rings and moissanite rings.

Buying Online in the UK: What to Expect
Ring Size
UK ring sizes use letters (for example, L or N) rather than the US number system. Measure with a ring sizer or have a jeweller size the finger, and tell us your UK size when you order.

Delivery
Each ring is handmade in our workshop in Surat, India, then sent by FedEx or DHL Express. Orders are processed within 0–3 working days, and UK delivery usually takes 3–6 working days after dispatch. Every parcel is insured in transit and sent in discreet packaging.
Import VAT and Duty
Because rings are shipped from India, UK import VAT and any customs duty are not included in the checkout price. For goods over £135, these charges are collected by the courier before delivery. GOV.UK explains how tax and duty on goods from abroad work.

Eligible items can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Custom and personalised pieces are not returnable, so check the return policy before you order.

Oval Engagement Ring FAQs
Is an oval engagement ring a good choice?
Yes. Ovals combine brilliant sparkle, a larger look for their weight and a durable shape without sharp points, which makes them practical as well as beautiful.
Which ratio should I choose for an oval diamond?
Between 1.35 and 1.50 gives the classic oval shape. Go lower for a rounder look or higher for a longer, slimmer stone.
Will I pay import VAT on an engagement ring from Soul De Diamante?
Rings are shipped from India, so UK import VAT and any duty are payable to the courier for orders over £135. These charges are not included at checkout.
What is the most popular metal for an oval engagement ring?
Yellow gold and white gold are both very popular. 14ct gold is a good everyday choice, and 18ct gives a richer colour.
